about
I never went North.
lyrics
I said goodbye to Reading
The Lady who had held me
In her arms as I learned to read
And I held her for a while
and departed with a smile
and turned my back to see the Wider World.
I went to London
That sprawling urban jungle
To seek a fortune among the liars and thieves
I got a nine to five
Just enough to stay alive.
But the pasture wasn't new or even green.
The road fell towards me,
sometime after Derby.
I made my camp by the M1 Junction
Through the towns of Steel
Busking for a meal
And broke through the sprawl into the Dales
Through mountains making trails
I stopped in for the tales
of long lost souls amongst the hills
Northumberland awaken
There's a storm a quaking
In the east, thirty miles away.
Further to the northern heights
I walked the sky with a red kite
He bowed and swooped across the stage
Great lakes rise before us
The astral host above us
We go into the vale of monsters
When there was no more North
I leapt into the waters
and made my way to icy shores
When I ran into Hoy
A musician and his boy
Pulled me out onto the land
I have been stilled
By the Northern chill
And the Grace and the Charm of the islands.
But the urge still burns
And once more I turn
Not to the North, but to the East.
